The M-421 summer flight jacket was issued to U.S. Navy and Marine Corps reconnaissance aircraft crew members for missions in tropical regions.
This model was developed in the early 1940s and has many variations, but this one is based on the "M-421a", which has a stylish look with less of a workwear feel thanks to the balanced pocket layout.
Like the original, it uses nickel-plated Talon zippers, and features underarm gussets and action pleats on the back, faithfully reproducing the functional details of a flight jacket suited to activities in the cramped cockpit.
The fabric is made of thin, fine-grained cotton twill.
It's light to wear and can be easily incorporated into military styles for spring and summer, which is a nice feature.
On the left chest is a patch of the unit's insignia, featuring King Kamehameha raising the old Hawaiian flag, and on the back is a representation of the unit members' memories of "visiting various islands on their rest days and sharing drinks with friends."
This is a versatile piece that combines a stylish body with a catchy design.
